The 7B cold cathode is a penning-type sensor. In this configurationthe anode is placed midway between two parallel-connected cathodes.The anode is a loop of metal wire whose plane is parallel to thatof the cathodes. A potential difference of a few kilovolts ismaintained between the anode and the cathodes. In addition, amagnetic field is applied between the cathodes by a permanentmagnet, usually external of the gauge body. Electrons emitted fromeither of the two cathodes must travel in helical paths due to themagnetic field, eventually reaching the anode, which carries a highpositive charge. During the course of this long electron path, manyof the electrons collide with the molecules of residual gas,creating positive ions, which travel more directly to the cathodes.The ionization current is then converted to a vacuum reading.
